The Real Sackett Family Behind Louis L’Amour’s Legendary Novels | Sackett Ranch

When Louis L’Amour began writing his first Sackett novel in 1959, he wasn’t inventing a fictional family out of thin air. He was reaching back into real American history and borrowing a name that already carried centuries of grit, honor, and frontier courage.

L’Amour first encountered the Sackett name while stationed in Arizona as a young man. He came across a lonely desert watering hole called Sackett’s Well, named after a real Union Army colonel — Deloss Burton Sackett (1822–1885), often called D.B. Sackett. Colonel Sackett was a respected officer who served with distinction in the Civil War, known for his leadership, integrity, and frontier character. That name stuck with L’Amour.

Years later, when he started his epic Western series, he gave his fictional pioneers the surname “Sackett” and built an entire saga around them — Tell Sackett, Tyrel Sackett, Orrin Sackett, and more. The books became international bestsellers. The films starring Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck turned the Sacketts into household names and helped define the modern image of the honorable American cowboy.

But here’s the part most readers never knew: the Sacketts weren’t fiction. They were — and still are — a real family.

Our lineage traces directly back to Simon Sackett, who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in late 1630 aboard the ship Lyon. He and his wife Isabel were among the earliest English settlers. Simon helped found Newtown (now Cambridge), one of the first inland towns in America. He didn’t live to see the full harvest of his labor — he passed in 1635 — but the roots he planted grew deep and spread west with every generation.

That same pioneer bloodline produced men like Colonel D.B. Sackett, whose real-life courage and character inspired L’Amour to borrow the name for fiction. The novels became a fictional representation of the very values our family has lived since 1630: show up, keep your word, protect what matters, and build something that outlasts you.

At Sackett Ranch we don’t just share the name — we live the story every single day on the same Arizona soil our ancestors would recognize. When you wear our headwear or apparel, you’re not wearing movie memorabilia. You’re wearing the real thing — gear made right here in America by people who still believe in the code those novels celebrated.
