Remembering Our Heroes: A Memorial Day Tribute from Sackett Ranch

At Sackett Ranch, Memorial Day is more than a date on the calendar—it's a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifices made by those who have served our nation. Among these heroes are members of the Sackett family, whose stories of valor continue to inspire and resonate.

Colonel William H. Sackett (1839–1864): A Civil War Hero

William embarked on a legal career in Chicago before answering the call to serve during the American Civil War. Joining the 9th New York Cavalry Regiment in 1861, he quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and bravery.

Colonel Sackett played a pivotal role in several key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Tragically, he was mortally wounded on June 11, 1864, during the Battle of Trevilian Station in Virginia and succumbed to his injuries three days later. His dedication and sacrifice were honored by naming the Grand Army of the Republic Post.

Sergeant LaVern Fred Sackett (1922–1944): A World War II Patriot

LaVern Fred Sackett, born in 1922, served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was killed in action in Germany in 1944, exemplifying the bravery and commitment of the Greatest Generation. War correspondent Jack Bell chronicled Sergeant Sackett's heroic final day, concluding with his colonel's poignant words: "A real soldier just died, men."

Other notable Sacketts who served.

Nathaniel Sackett (1737–1805): Revolutionary War Spymaster

Nathaniel Sackett was appointed by George Washington to establish an intelligence-gathering network during the American Revolutionary War. He recruited agents and informers behind enemy lines to uncover British plans, playing a vital role in the success of the Continental Army's espionage efforts.

Benjamin Edwin Sackett (1911–2002): FBI Agent and Army Officer

Benjamin Edwin Sackett was an FBI special agent who played a crucial role in cracking a German spy ring in New York prior to World War II. During the war, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, contributing to the Allied efforts in the European Theater. His service is documented in the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress.

Rear Admiral Albert M. Sackett (1920–2016): A Lifetime of Naval Service

Albert Monroe Sackett served in the U.S. Navy for 40 years, participating in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and served as the commandant of the Ninth Naval District from June 1976 to August 1977. His dedication to service and leadership left a lasting impact on the Navy and the nation.

Ida Ruth Elzey (1910–2005)

Who served as an officer in the Women's Army Corps during the Second World War and in the subsequent US military government in occupied Germany.

General Delos Bennet Sackett (1822–1885)

Who was a career soldier promoted to Brevet Major General for gallantry during the American Civil War, and later appointed senior Inspector General of the United States Army with the rank of Brigadier General.
