Cotton Glossary: Ring-Spun, Combed, Carded — What It All Means
Pick up almost any t-shirt and read the tag. Somewhere on it you'll find a little string of words that sounds like it was written to impress you: 100% combed ring-spun cotton. Or maybe just 100% cotton, which sounds the same but often isn't. Those words aren't decoration — they're a plain description of how that shirt was made, and they tell you more about how it'll feel in year three than any product photo ever will.
Trouble is, nobody explains them. Brands print the terms and hope the mystery does the selling. We'd rather you actually know what you're paying for — whether you buy from us or anybody else. So here's the whole glossary, decoded in plain English, no gates, no fine print. Pour a cup of coffee and let's read a tag together.
Start With the Fiber: What Staple Length Means
Before a single machine touches it, cotton quality starts in the field. Every boll of cotton is made of thousands of individual fibers, and the length of those fibers is called staple length.
Staple length is the length of an individual cotton fiber — and longer is better. Longer fibers can be twisted into smoother, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends poking out. Shorter fibers make yarn that's fuzzier and weaker, because there are more fiber ends that can work loose, pill, or break.
Where the cotton grows, how it's bred, and how it's handled all affect staple length. What Does Ring-Spun Cotton Mean?
Here's the definition, straight up:
Ring-spun cotton is cotton yarn made by continuously drawing out and twisting fibers around a ring-shaped spindle. The constant twisting tightens and thins the strand, producing a finer, stronger, smoother yarn than standard spinning.
Think of it like braiding rope by hand versus stapling loose strands together. The ring-spinning process keeps the fibers aligned and locks them down tight along the length of the yarn. The result you can feel: a ring-spun tee is noticeably softer and smoother against the skin, and the fabric surface is flatter — which also means screen prints lay down cleaner and hold detail better over years of washing.
Ring spinning is slower and costs more to run than the alternative, which is why cheap shirts usually skip it. That alternative deserves its own entry.
Open-End Cotton: The Other Way to Spin
Open-end (or rotor-spun) cotton is yarn made by feeding loose fibers into a high-speed rotor that flings them together with centrifugal force. It's dramatically faster and cheaper than ring spinning — and it shows.
Open-end yarn is bulkier, coarser, and fuzzier, with more loose fiber ends on the surface. Textile folks generally put open-end yarn at roughly 10–30% weaker than comparable ring-spun yarn, which is why bargain tees tend to fray at the collar and thin out at the shoulders long before a well-made shirt would. If you've ever gotten a free shirt at an event that felt like sandpaper out of the bag, you've met open-end cotton.
Nothing immoral about it — open-end fabric has honest uses where cost matters more than feel. But when a $8 tee and a $38 tee both say "100% cotton," the spinning is often half the difference.
Combed vs. Carded: The Sorting Step
Before cotton is spun at all, the fibers get cleaned and aligned. How thoroughly that happens is the combed-versus-carded question.
Carded cotton has been through the basic pass: machines clean the fibers and roughly align them, short fibers and all. Every usable cotton fiber goes through carding — it's the standard step, not a premium one.
Combed cotton has been through an extra step where fine-toothed combs remove the short fibers and impurities, leaving only the longer fibers lying parallel before spinning. Combing throws away a chunk of the raw material — that's why it costs more — but what's left makes yarn that's smoother, meaningfully stronger, and far less prone to pilling.
Pilling, by the way, is exactly what it sounds like: those little balls that form on a shirt's surface are short, loose fiber ends that friction has worked free and tangled together. Combing removes most of the fibers that would have become pills. That's the whole trick.
How to Read a Tag: The Terms Stack
These words aren't competing claims — they describe different steps of the same journey, and they stack. The order of operations for every cotton tee on earth looks roughly like this: grow → gin → card → (comb, if they spring for it) → spin (ring or open-end) → knit → cut and sew → print.
So when a tag says "100% combed ring-spun cotton," it's telling you: all cotton, short fibers combed out, then ring-spun into fine strong yarn. That's the premium path at both forks in the road. A tag that just says "100% cotton" is usually — not always, but usually — carded, open-end cotton, because if a brand paid for the good steps, they brag about them.
The Quick Glossary
Tape this to the inside of your hat if you need to:
- Staple length — the length of an individual cotton fiber. Longer staple = smoother, stronger yarn.
- Carding — the standard cleaning-and-aligning pass every cotton fiber gets. "Carded cotton" means it stopped there.
- Combed cotton — cotton that got an extra pass to remove short fibers, leaving long parallel fibers. Softer, stronger, resists pilling.
- Ring-spun — yarn twisted continuously on a ring spindle. Finer, stronger, smoother than open-end. The premium spinning method.
- Open-end (rotor-spun) — yarn formed fast in a spinning rotor. Cheaper, coarser, weaker. Standard on budget blanks.
- Pilling — short fiber ends working loose and balling up on the fabric surface. Combing and ring-spinning both fight it.
- Jersey — the knit pattern used for nearly all t-shirts. Smooth on the front, looped on the back.

Weight and Spinning Are Different Questions
One thing that trips people up: fabric weight and yarn quality are separate axes. A heavyweight tee can be made from rough open-end yarn — thick but scratchy, like a burlap sack with sleeves. A featherweight fashion tee can be beautiful ring-spun cotton that wears through in two summers because there's just not much fabric there.

Here's the hopeful part, and we mean it. Every one of these words on a tag is a place where somebody chose to do it right or do it cheap. Longer-staple cotton costs more than short. Combing costs more than carding. Ring spinning costs more than open-end. None of those choices show up in a product photo — they show up in year three, when one shirt is soft and solid and the other is a pilled, stretched-out rag.
